Nobody leaves a voicemail anymore: where your missed callers really go

Here's a number that should bother you more than it does: 95%. That's the share of smartphone users who find texting more convenient than voicemail, so when a call rolls to voicemail, most people just hang up rather than leave a message. That's not a bad week. That's the better part of everyone who called to give you their business, gone without a word.

And it isn't a fluke that's about to pass. Voicemail has been fading for years (one provider clocked its customers' voicemail deposits down 8% and pickups down 14% in a single stretch), and people haven't drifted back. This is just how people are now.

Where do they go instead?

So picture the person who just reached your voicemail. They don't sigh, leave a careful message, and wait by the phone. They hang up and tap the next name in the results. You were a tab they closed. The one thing that catches them before they do is a quick text the moment you miss the call, and there's a free tool that writes that text for you.

The cruel part is you'll never know it happened. A voicemail at least leaves a trace. A hang-up leaves nothing behind: no message, no number, no sign that a paying customer was just here and gone. The loss doesn't show up anywhere you'd think to look.

What does that cost you?

That's why I don't think of voicemail as a safety net. It's a trapdoor with a polite greeting on it. It feels like you're covered, and you're not. The money it quietly lets walk out is the biggest bill nobody in your shop ever sees.

A better greeting won't help. Nobody's listening to it anyway. What helps is the phone actually getting answered: by a person, or by something that's genuinely there when a person can't be. That's the whole reason this company exists: so the call that would've hit a trapdoor reaches somebody who picks up instead.
